PURPOSE
The Missoula Music Teachers Association (MMTA) consists of private music teachers from Missoula and the surrounding areas who are dedicated to the advancement of music education. Our membership includes piano, instrumental and voice teachers who strive to maintain the highest standards of teaching and performance. MMTA is fully affiliated with the Montana Sate Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association. We aim to promote the growth and professional development of our members by providing programs that encourage and support teaching and performance and to provide support to qualifying students of our members in the form of scholarships and performance opportunities at the local, state and national levels.

WHAT WE ARE DOING

  • Chamber Music (information is pending)

  • The MMTA Spring Festival dates are March 11-13, 2016 (Friday through Sunday), and is held at University of Montana. It is open to pianists, vocalists and string players of all levels. Entrants are required to perform two pieces of contrasting style/period. Adjudicators work with each student and also provide written comments. This is an event in which both members and non-member teachers can participate.

The public is invited to attend the Festival Finale Concert on Sunday the 13th at the University Music Recital Hall at 3:00 p.m. featuring the top performances from the two-day festival.

  • On March 4, 5, 6 & 9, the Springs of Missoula will host our first Student Playathon Scholarship Fundraiser. The public is invited. Concerts are at 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Friday the 4th; 1:15-3:15 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday the 5th and 6th, and 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday the 9th. Students of a variety of instrumental solos and ensembles of all ages will perform, including UM Music Majors. We thank all who are supporting this Fundraiser and our students. In addition we especially thank The Springs for their great generosity in providing us with such a lovely performance venue.

  • PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

Chamber Music: Students and Teachers alike will team up to offer three Chamber Music concerts to the public this May. Any teacher interested in participating should contact MMTA President, Annelies Aiking-Taylor at annelies.aikingtaylor@hotmail.com. MMTA members and non-members alike are encouraged to become involved!

Fall Festival: The Montana State Music Teachers Association (MSMTA) will hold its annual Fall Festival in Great Falls, November 3-5. Entry Deadline is September 15, 2016. Students ages 9-19 are eligible to enter. Piano, voice and all instruments are included either in Solo Performance or Ensembles. Students may enter either to compete for awards or just for comments. MMTA members and non-members are eligible to enter students in the statewide Fall Festival. Please go to www.msmta.com for detailed information.

MTNA Competitions: All member teachers of MMTA and MSMTA may enter students in the Music Teachers National Association Competitions at the state level. Competitions are held annually in conjunction with the MSMTA State Conference to be held in Great Falls, November 3-5, 2016. State level winners move on to Divisional competitions and those winners then compete at the National MTNA Conference to be held in Baltimore, in 2017. Information and registration is available online at www.mtna.org.

    AWARDS

MMTA will present the Chopin Award to graduating seniors from any of the local high schools who study with an MMTA member and are involved in their high school music organizations as a pianist.

Each year, MMTA awards a $500 scholarship to an incoming Music Major at the University of Montana through its UM Endowment Fund. This student must have been studying with an MMTA member teacher prior to entering the University.

The MSMTA June D. Werner Memorial Scholarship of $100 is available to students who study with an MSMTA member teacher and wish to attend a summer music camp.

The MSMTA Cinda Tompkins Piano Pedagogy Scholarship honors Ciinda Tompkins, an MSMTA member, who devoted her life to the profession of piano teaching. This scholarship is given to a music student whose goal is to teach piano. It is to be awarded during the student's junior or senior year of undergraduate studies. The student's former teacher must currently be a member of the MSMTA. This is a $500 award.

More information is available online at www.msmta.com for both the June Werner and Cinda Tompkins Scholarships. Click on Newsletter, Spring 2016.
